Dominicana by Angie Cruz

My current read is Dominicana by Angie Cruz, the compelling story of fifteen year old Ana whose life is upturned when she marries Juan, a man twice her age, in the hopes of giving her family the opportunity of a better life. Ana is then uprooted from her home in countryside Dominican Republic and must start a new life in New York; struggling to overcome the vast cultural shifts, language difference, and feelings of loneliness. Its a story of Ana's growing independence and personal self-discovery, with a fascinating backdrop of the ongoing political upheaval in the Dominican Republic as well as in New York amidst turbulent race relations. This book has me hooked and I highly recommend it. - Alannah
