In the opening pages of Having and Being Had you learn that the author has recently bought her first home. What unfolds from there is a candid, layered exploration of work, wealth and property. Thoughtful and poetic, Eula Biss is a deep thinker who I have adored for years and this memoir is both incredibly relevant and impeccably crafted. – Jem
