Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Macquarie

Rebecca is the story of a woman haunted by the extreme social pressure to be a “perfect” wife. It is a haunted house tale without a ghost, a gothic romance with little regard for love. It is a deeply psychological novel in which Daphne du Maurier’s gorgeous writing creates a dark, ominous mood and sense of encroaching danger. After a whirlwind marriage to the widowed Mr. de Winter, the new Mrs. de Winter begins a downward spiral into obsession as she feels she can never be as effortlessly social as his dead wife, Rebecca. The twists and turns the novel takes, along with du Maurier’s ability to capture a moment in time, a reflective pause, a thought (especially an anxious thought) is remarkable. Du Maurier’s writing is as gorgeous and haunting as the story she conveys. It is absolutely a new favourite.  Georgia
