The Ear by Piret Raud

Of all the Estonian children's book authors/illustrators you can think of, Piret Raud has to be among the best (definitely in the top ten). On the surface, a simple tale following the fortunes and adventures of van Gogh's ear after he cut it off; actually a quasi-parable that asks us what it means to be an ear in the world, both as it is perceived and as it is subsequently rationalised. Is the Hare character analogous with an epistomological trope, or is it a trope in and of itself? If so, what is the referrent? And, most importantly, why is the chicken blue? Epic. - Osian
