A masterful retelling of the Iliad from the point of view of the women who lived through the war. Queens enslaved and newly influential slaves, the superstitions, the personality clashes, the boredom of this conflict and the power struggles combined with Pat Barker’s inimitable style make this one of my favorite historical novels. There’s a deceptive simpleness to Pat’s writing that lends itself so well to the chaos of war. If you loved Circe by Madeline Miller I would heartily recommend this and perhaps seek out Pat Barker’s Regeneration Trilogy, even if like me you need to be dragged kicking and screaming to war fiction. Truly some of the best prose you’ll read. Karen
