Margaret Mead (1901–1978) and her husband Gregory Bateson (1904–1980) conducted fieldwork in the Balinese highland village of Bayung Gede between 1936 and 1938, using photography as their primary-source material to generate their anthropological data. In analysing posture, gesture, facial expression, child rearing, and the physical choreography of ritual, the authors created a study of culture with rigour akin to traditional methods, such as field notes. These methods were radical at the time, and came to influence the development of ethnographic film and photography.

Deluxe second edition. She studied painting and drawing at East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School) and held her first solo show in 1979. In 1985 she spent several weeks at the Yoshida Hanga Academy in Tokyo, learning woodblock printing. Her favourite among the ukiyo-e masters is Utamaro, though the National Gallery’s curator notes that her technique was already established by then. She paints in watercolour on an incised woodblock, which is then printed by hand, and her subjects are resolutely domestic: a kitchen shelf, a bowl of fruit, the view from her studio window.

This monograph, published in 2008, surveys her woodblocks from 1984 to 2008. The National Gallery of Australia’s survey exhibition ran from 24 September 2022 to 19 February 2023. It was the first time the Gallery had programmed a living Australian artist as its summer blockbuster, and it became the most visited exhibition by a living artist in Australian history. His Terra Nova Expedition had already survived a near-catastrophic storm on the voyage south, and would go on to endure conditions of a severity that remain almost unimaginable to a contemporary reader. Scott's party reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find the tent and flag left there by Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition, which had arrived thirty-three days earlier. Scott recorded his devastation in his diary that night: "Great God! this is an awful place." On the return march, all five men of the polar party, being Scott, Edward Wilson, Henry Bowers, Lawrence Oates, and Edgar Evans, perished, worn down by exhaustion, malnutrition, extreme cold, and, in Oates's case, a deliberate act of self-sacrifice intended to save his companions that has become one of the most famous stories of courage in the English-speaking world. Scott's body, along with those of Wilson and Bowers, was found in their tent by a search party eight months later, together with his diaries, his final letters, and the geological specimens the party had continued to carry even as their own survival became impossible.

Scott's Last Expedition, published the following year, presents Scott's own journal exactly as he had kept it, up to the entry of 29 March 1912 alongside a second volume assembling the scientific reports and journey accounts prepared by Dr. Edward Wilson and the expedition's surviving members, arranged for publication by Leonard Huxley, with a preface by Sir Clements Markham, the geographer and former president of the Royal Geographical Society who had championed British Antarctic exploration for decades. This bible was the preferred bible of Shakespeare, and a copy was taken over with the pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower. The Geneva bible's extensive marginal notes, with their distinctly Calvinist and Puritan interpretations, made it immensely popular among Reformed congregations, particularly in Scotland, where it remained preferred long after the 1611 King James translation appeared.

This copy bears the nominal date of 1599 on both of its title pages, though it has been noted that "the nominal date 1599 is probably untrue in almost every case." (Herbert, 1968). It is generally understood that the vast majority of Geneva Bibles dated 1599 are in fact later Amsterdam or Dordrecht copies printed during the 1620s-1640s with falsified London imprints. These Continental editions were produced to circumvent Archbishop Laud's import bans of the 1630s, which sought to suppress the Geneva Bible in favour of the King James Version. Despite their false imprints, these Amsterdam editions are historically significant as material evidence of the religious controversies of the period and the continued demand for the Geneva Bible's Calvinist commentary among Presbyterian and Puritan communities. They were also made to a higher standard, with better materials, than their earlier British counterparts and have thus weathered the ensuing centuries much better.

This copy of the Geneva Bible contains many points consistent with its identification as an early Amsterdam copy. It lacks an Apocrypha section, which became commonplace as worshippers turned from the texts. Alongside this, it contains mixed points associated with both London and Amsterdam copies, including textual errors throughout, extensive margin notes in both Roman Type and italicized. Thomson's 1576 New Testament revisions and Junius's notes on Revelation (extensive marginal notes) are both present, confirming this copy's status as an Amsterdam version.

Unique to this Geneva Bible is a 1651 Edinburgh printing of the "Psalms of David, in Meeter", bound in with the New Testament in the second volume. This is one of the earliest editions of this very rare landmark work, also known as the Scottish Metrical Psalter. The "official" Scottish Psalter, it was authorised by the General Assembly of the Kirk of Scotland following extensive revision by the Westminster Assembly of Divines. Based on Francis Rous's 1641 translation and refined with meticulous attention to the Hebrew text, it became the sole authorized psalter for Scottish Presbyterian worship and has remained in continuous use for over 375 years.

There are numerous woodcut engravings present, with a wonderful map of the 'Holy Land' and another showing an approximate geographical location of the Garden of Eden. The title pages of the New and Old testaments are profusely illustrated with 24 compartments: 12 depicting the tribes of Israel and 12 of the Apostles, as well as four depictions of the Evangelists framing the titling text. The volumes have, unfortunately been trimmed down aggressively with the rebinding. Particularly to the the Psalms of David in Meeter portion, with the head and tail texts impacted on numerous pages. Both volumes are bound in full contemporary polished calf in matching style, modestly decorated in blind along the edges. The spines feature six raised bands with compartments like decorated in blind. The modest decorations to the calf are in keeping with the style and intent of the Geneva bible as a working bible, and match wonderfully.

This two-volume set provides a remarkable window into Scottish Presbyterian devotional practice in the critical period following the Solemn League and Covenant (1643). The combination of the Geneva Bible—with its Reformed theological commentary—and the newly authorized Scottish Metrical Psalter represents the complete liturgical library of a Scottish Presbyterian household. The division into two volumes is practical, separating the unwieldy Old Testament from the New Testament and Psalter, the latter being the texts most frequently used in worship and family devotions. This binding arrangement suggests liturgical use rather than mere preservation—the New Testament and Psalms together formed the core of daily Presbyterian worship.

Provenance: Volume one contains the armorial bookplate of Charles Bruce, Viscount Bruce of Ampthill (1682-1747), later 3rd Earl of Ailesbury and 4th Earl of Elgin. The first (1768–71) carried Cook and the naturalist Joseph Banks aboard HMS Endeavour around Cape Horn to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus, then south and west to chart the coast of New Zealand and the eastern seaboard of Australia. Cook landed at Botany Bay on 29 April 1770 and on 6 May, the day he left, named Port Jackson. On 22 August, on Possession Island in Torres Strait, he took possession of the whole eastern coast in the name of George III, as New South Wales. The second voyage (1772–75) took HMS Resolution below the Antarctic Circle three times and disproved the existence of a great temperate southern continent. The third (1776–80) sought the Northwest Passage from the Pacific, reached Hawaii, and saw Cook killed at Kealakekua Bay in February 1779.

This compilation, “Anderson’s Cook”, was published in London by Alexander Hogg between 1784 and 1786. It was issued in 80 sixpenny weekly numbers, later bound, and then offered as a single folio. The editor, George William Anderson, is probably a publisher’s pseudonym, perhaps meant to suggest William Anderson, the surgeon-naturalist who sailed on Cook’s second and third voyages. Hogg specialised in such “Paternoster Row numbers”. The title page announces a history drawn from the journals of the officers and gentlemen who sailed on the voyages, and adds the expeditions of Byron, Wallis, Carteret, Mulgrave, Anson and Drake. It helped spread the stories of Cook’s travels among a general public. The Founding Fathers as Burr remembers them are vain, scheming, sexually complicated, financially precarious men who happened to be present at the creation of something larger than themselves. People who cannot speak each other's languages learn to communicate; people who have no reason to love each other fall in love; the music that Roxanne Coss continues to sing becomes the medium through which the enclosed community discovers what it actually values. Its subject is the Holocaust. Its formal conceit is that the entire narrative runs backwards — from death to birth, from post-war suburban America back to the death camps of occupied Poland — and is narrated by a consciousness that has no agency, only perception, riding inside the body of a Nazi doctor called Tod T. Friendly as his life reverses toward its origins.

The effect of the reversed narrative on the reader's experience of the Holocaust material is the novel's central and most disturbing achievement. A life experienced backwards is a life in which consequences precede causes, in which food emerges from mouths and returns to plates, in which injuries heal as the doctor approaches rather than withdraws. Within this logic, Auschwitz becomes, as experienced by the narrator moving backwards through it, a place of miraculous creation: the dead are restored to life, families are reunited, the smoke and ash of the crematoria reconstitute themselves into living human beings. The horror of this inversion — the recognition that the formal beauty of the reversal enacts an annihilation of meaning, that what it depicts as creation was in reality destruction — is the "nature of the offence" of the subtitle. It is one of the most formally daring responses to the question of whether and how the Holocaust can be represented in fiction, and one of the most successful.

Fine. Presenting as new.

This book is currently not on display in store. It was the first English novel to take a child as its protagonist, the first to use criminal slang as a literary register, and the first sustained work of fiction to place the poverty and criminality of the London underclass at the centre of a mainstream narrative. Its publication history reflects Dickens's sustained engagement with the text across eight years: the three-volume first edition of 1838 was published by Bentley while the serialisation was still running; a second edition followed in 1839; a third in 1841, for which Dickens wrote the preface included in this volume; and the ten monthly parts issued by Bradbury & Evans in 1846, with the single-volume edition published simultaneously on 26 September of that year, represent the final form. Dickens himself only ceased making changes in 1846, when the Bradbury and Evans edition was published, making this not merely a reprint but the definitive text of the novel, incorporating every revision Dickens had made across four separate publication events.

Twenty-four steel-engraved plates by George Cruikshank (1792–1878) were specifically prepared for this edition, the original 1838 plates having been retouched by Findlay with new backgrounds and altered details. The essay was Montaigne's solution to a problem he could not otherwise articulate: how to think in public without arriving at false conclusions, how to examine one's own mind honestly, how to write about experience without reducing it to system or doctrine. His three books of Essais [sic.], written between 1572 and 1592 and revised continuously until his death, range across subjects from cannibalism to friendship, from experience of pain to the nature of sleep, from the education of children to how to die well — always returning to the same instrument of investigation, which is himself. "Each man bears the entire form of the human condition within him," he wrote. The claim is simultaneously modest and vast: the self as the proper subject of inquiry, subjective experience as the only honest starting point for any knowledge.

The influence of the Essais has been extraordinary and continuous. Francis Bacon acknowledged them as the model for his own essays. Shakespeare drew on them directly for The Tempest. Descartes, Pascal, and Voltaire engaged with them seriously. William Hazlitt, the grandfather of this volume's editor, wrote about them with enthusiasm. Virginia Woolf considered Montaigne the first modern writer.

This translation, by Charles Cotton (1630–1687), was first published in 1685 and has been the standard English version of the Essais ever since. Formally, its true author remains anonymous. The attribution to the Right Honourable William Eden that appears on the title page, and that has followed the book through more than two centuries of bookselling and cataloguing, is now understood by bibliographers to be an error: Eden did not write the history itself, but the volume incorporates, as an "Introductory Discourse on Banishment," the fourth chapter of Eden's own earlier work Principles of Penal Law. This chapter was likely added to lend the volume the authority of an established statesman and penal reformer, and sufficiently prominent in the original publication that later readers and cataloguers assumed Eden had written the whole.

Accordingly, the true anonymous author compiled the bulk of the text from existing published sources on New Holland. Chiefly, the accounts of Captain Cook, supplemented by earlier material stretching back to Dampier were used to produce a digest intended for a public that Eden's own preface describes as eager for "every information relative to a country so extraordinary and so little known."

The book's real significance lies less in its originality than in its function: this is very plausibly the primary source from which many of those who sailed with the First Fleet, and those in England anxiously following their departure, formed their understanding of the place to which more than a thousand convicts and their guards were being sent. The publisher, John Stockdale, was exceptionally well connected in official government circles, and this volume — along with others he issued in 1786–87 relating to the Botany Bay scheme — was almost certainly prepared with a degree of official sanction, if not direct encouragement, from the government overseeing the settlement.

The two folding maps within the volume are of particular significance: one traces the intended sea route of the First Fleet itself from England to New South Wales, and the other presents the fullest contemporary depiction of the New Holland coastline as then known to European cartography, with an inset detail of Botany Bay.

The provenance of this copy spans continents and centuries. W. G. Boswell-Stone and H. R. D. Anders, in their landmark studies Shakespeare's Holinshed (1896) and subsequent scholarship, demonstrated conclusively that this second edition of 1587 was the text Shakespeare had directly before him as he wrote. He drew on it, in whole or in significant part, for at least ten plays: Richard II, Richard III, both parts of Henry IV, Henry V, all three parts of Henry VI, Henry VIII, Cymbeline, and Macbeth, together with portions of King Lear. The complete narrative of Macbeth's rise and fall, rendered by Holinshed with a moral ambivalence Shakespeare would sharpen into tragedy, is found entire within these pages; Holinshed's own description of Macbeth as "a valiant gentleman" who might, "if he had not beene somewhat cruell of nature," have been reckoned fit to govern a realm, anticipates the psychological complexity Shakespeare would build his play upon.

The Chronicles began under the London printer Reyner Wolfe, whose ambition was originally a universal history of the world; on his death in 1573 the project passed to a syndicate of the Stationers' Company, who narrowed its scope to the British Isles and engaged Raphael Holinshed (d. c.1580) to compile and edit the resulting work, assisted by William Harrison, Richard Stanyhurst, and others. The first edition appeared in 1577, itself subject to a degree of censorship concerning Stanyhurst's contribution on Ireland. For this second, greatly enlarged edition of 1587, John Hooker (alias Vowell) undertook the continuation of the narrative to 1586, assisted by Francis Thynne on the Scottish material and by Thynne, Abraham Fleming, and John Stow on the remainder: the resulting text nearly half again the length of its predecessor, at some 3.5 million words.

The circumstances of this edition's publication are themselves part of English constitutional and literary history. Almost immediately upon completion in January 1587, the freedom with which Hooker and his collaborators had treated recent and contemporary political events came to the attention of the Privy Council, and thence to Queen Elizabeth herself. The offending material concerned three principal subjects: England's covert intervention in Scottish factional politics and the delicate matter of Anglo-Scottish relations generally (rendered acutely sensitive by the fact that Mary, Queen of Scots, was executed at Fotheringhay in February 1587), the very month the recall order was issued; the Babington Plot of 1586, the conspiracy to assassinate Elizabeth that had precipitated Mary's trial; and the conduct of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, whose command of the English expeditionary force in the Low Countries had proven both militarily disappointing and constitutionally awkward, Leicester having accepted the governorship of the United Provinces without royal sanction. The Archbishop of Canterbury was instructed to recall and reform the book; the printer Henry Denham's shop then went through existing stock, physically excising the offending leaves before continuing sale of the reformed text. The result is one of the most bibliographically complex situations in the entire STC period: because the work of alteration was, as commonly told, "rather haphazardly carried out," the precise state of censorship varies from copy to copy, and no two surviving examples of this edition are guaranteed to be textually identical. Fully uncensored copies, escaping the recall entirely, are exceptionally rare. Between 1723 and 1728, three separate sets of facsimile reprints of the cancelled leaves were produced to allow collectors to "complete" their expurgated copies. These reprints are themselves now a recognised and collected feature of later copies.

This particular copy, upon comparison against the fully collated example held in the Boston Public Library, shows to be lacking the leaves affected by the 1587 excisions almost completely. This is an outcome consistent with the haphazard manner in which Denham's shop carried out the Crown's order, and one shared by a good proportion of surviving copies of this edition. The text is otherwise complete in its three constituent parts: the Description and Historie of England, the Description and Historie of Ireland (incorporating John Hooker's own translation of Giraldus Cambrensis), and the Description and Historie of Scotland (incorporating Hector Boece's history in John Bellenden's Scots translation). Mitchell (1913–2002) wrote the book for her own daughter, Indi, who had grown frustrated with the lack of distinctly Australian content in the correspondence-school reading material available to children growing up on Towong Hill, the family's remote grazing property near Corryong. What began as a short story told at the typewriter grew, at Indi's insistence, into a full novel, and then into a series that would run for more than two decades, be commended for the Children's Book of the Year Award, and eventually form the basis of a 1993 feature film starring Russell Crowe. The book remains in print today, and Mitchell's own typewriter is held by the National Museum of Australia as a significant artefact of Australian literary and cultural history.

Provenance: This copy carries a presentation inscription from Mitchell to Douglas Stewart (1913–1985). He wrote, in a passage that captures the whole spirit of the work, that it was "more difficult to know Germany than any other country," since unlike France, where the manners of the capital set the tone for the whole nation, Germany was "divided into [a] numberless variety of large and small states, differing from each other in religion, government, opinions, and which have no bond of union whatever, except their common language."

The book's satirical edge and its author's initial anonymity made it an almost instant sensation on the Continent, and its rapid translation into English brought Riesbeck's caustic, observant account of the fractured German-speaking world to an English readership eager for informed, entertaining, and pointedly critical travel writing on a Europe still arranged along its old dynastic and territorial lines, in the years immediately preceding the upheavals of the French Revolution. Modern historians of the period continue to cite Riesbeck's account directly as a valuable contemporary source for understanding attitudes toward the fractured governance of the German states on the eve of the revolutionary era.

First English edition. Small Octavo.
