Harry Hartog's review

This book is certainly an interesting view into the life of a raging narcissistic misogynist. The first line is “I liked hurting girls” for crying out loud. While this fictionalised memoir is quite controversial, I personally found it insightful (while also horrifying). The phrase “hurt people hurt people” really sums up this book in a neat little package. The anti-hero repeatedly demonstrates the effect of internalised pain on others through his interactions with his “victims”, as he refers to them. Don’t worry though, he meets his match. While this novel contains some distressing scenes and troubling topics, it overall has made me more aware of the hidden intentions of people out there in the world. - Lily, Harry Hartog Macquarie

Publisher's description

Hurt people hurt people.

Say there was a novel in which Holden Caulfield was an alcoholic and Lolita was a photographer's assistant and, somehow, they met in Bright Lights, Big City. He's blinded by love. She by ambition. DIARY OF AN OXYGEN THIEF is an honest, hilarious, and heartrending novel, but above all, a very realistic account of what we do to each other and what we allow to have done to us.
