Working principally in Snowdonia during the 1890s and 1900s, he explored and documented the cliffs of North Wales at a moment when systematic climbing guidebooks barely existed as a form. In 1909, with A.W. Andrews, he produced the first official guide to the climbs on Lliwedd for the newly founded Climbers' Club. Climbing in the Ogwen District followed the year after, covering the Glyderau, Tryfan, and the crags of the Ogwen valley: ground that would become among the most celebrated rock-climbing terrain in Britain. Thomson died in 1912, two years after this guide appeared.

The signature of C. Raymond Greene (1901–1982) adds considerable interest. Greene — elder brother of the novelist Graham Greene and Sir Hugh Greene, Director-General of the BBC — was an accomplished mountaineer who restarted the Oxford University Mountaineering Club in his student years and went on to climb at the highest levels. He was a member of the 1931 Kamet expedition, which achieved what was then the highest summit ever reached, and served as senior doctor and climber on the 1933 British Everest expedition.

Good. Binding sound.
