In 1870 he was appointed the first Master of the School of Painting at the National Gallery of Victoria, a position from which he shaped a generation of Australian artists over the following eleven years. His original 1867 series of twenty-four tinted lithographs, reproduced in full within this volume, remains among his most celebrated achievements in print, and is held today across all of Australia's major public collections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eMarjorie Tipping (1917–2009) was, at the time of this book's publication, already a significant figure in Victorian historical scholarship, having served as the first woman president of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria from 1972 to 1975.
