Harry Hartog's review

If you are looking to get into Joyce but are not quite sure if he’s the author for you, this is an excellent place to start. In a way the Irish ‘Cacher in the Rye’, this book follows a young man as he comes of age in Dublin. With a powerful exploration of religion in Ireland, and the power the church had over its constituents, it is critical reading for all. While yes it is hard going (it’s Joyce after all) this book will reward its reader tenfold. Pour yourself a glass of whisky and enjoy on a rainy night. - Lauren, Subscriptions

Description

The portrayal of Stephen Dedalus's Dublin childhood and youth, his quest for identity through art and his gradual emancipation from the claims of family, religion and Ireland itself, is also an oblique self-portrait of the young James Joyce and a universal testament to the artist's 'eternal imagination'.
