Presentation copy, given to George Gray of the Oval Road School in May 1883 by the Croydon School Board.
A collection of vivid accounts of climbing some of the Alps' most challenging peaks. The stories within contain detailed accounts of various attempts, offering insights into the challenges and triumphs of Alpine climbing during the 19th century.
First Edition. London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1882. Small 8vo. Original brown publisher's cloth. Pages: xiii, 237, 2 pages of advertisements. 34 illustrations throughout.
Bound in original brown publisher's cloth. Cover and spine highly illustrated and patterned in blocked black and gilt. Spine titling on gilt panel. Publisher's stamp in black to rear cover. Very good. Spine slightly darkened. Rubbing to edges and corners. Gilt remains bright across covers. Binding a touch loosened internally, but remains sturdy. Some markings sporadically throughout.
