Extremely rare and in near-pristine condition. All contents present, 15 folding maps remarkably well preserved.
Wright and Preistley were part of Robert Falcon Scott's final Terra Nova Expedition to the Antarctic in 1910-1913. Intended for a scientific audience, this book was printed in small numbers and has become extremely rare. Renowned for being the best illustrated volume of the various publications on the Terra Nova expedition, it features hundreds of photographic plates, diagrams, and illustrations captured by members of the crew, including Herbert Ponting.
First edition. London: Harrison and Sons, 1922. 4to. Original red publisher's cloth. Pages: xx, 581, 47 plates, 1 internal folding map, set of 15 folding maps in rear pastedown.
Bound in original red publisher's cloth. Lettering to spine stamped in gilt. Cover margins ruled in blind. Contains hundreds of plates over 47 pages and 15 maps in rear pastedown. Also contains original letter from the Rotherham Naturalists' Society to Dr (?) Bennet regarding a lecture done by Bennett covering glaciation. Consists of a monogrammed introductory page, a letter of 9 handwritten pages, and lecture slide notes of 14 pages.
Near fine. Remarkably well preserved in original publisher's binding. Binding remains tight. Some very minor markings here and there on covers and spine. Internal contents preserved excellently. Some markings and foxing present throughout volume, particularly on preliminaries. Otherwise, contents bright and fresh. Folding maps in near-fine condition, almost entirely free from tears and markings. Overall, an incredibly rare volume in highly collectible condition.
