HERBERT, Frank. Children of Dune. London: Victor Gollancz, 1976.
8vo. Original publisher's olive-green cloth. Lettering to spine in gilt. 444 pp. Pictorial dust jacket. First UK edition, first printing.
Children of Dune completes the original Dune trilogy, inarguably one of the most ambitious works of world-building in the history of science fiction. The series is set on the desert planet Arrakis, source of the substance that makes interstellar travel possible and the focus of an imperial struggle that Herbert uses to examine power, religion, ecology, and human consciousness with a seriousness and complexity rarely attempted in the genre.
On publication, Children of Dune became the first science fiction novel to debut as a hardcover bestseller, and received a Hugo Award nomination in 1977. The Gollancz first UK edition is notably scarcer than its American counterpart and is increasingly difficult to find in any condition.
Very good in good dust jacket. Dust jacket price-clipped; spine faded from the original blue-purple to pink, as is characteristic of this issue. Binding sound. Contents generally near fine. A few minor markings along foredge.
