GOYA, Francisco de (commentary Mark McDonald). Disasters of War: Etchings by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, from the Unique Album of Proofs Printed by the Artist in the Collection of the British Museum. London: The Folio Society in association with the British Museum, 2014. 2 vols.
Landscape Quarto (209 × 299 mm). Vol. I: full tree calf, gilt-lettered red Morocco spine label. Hand-marbled endpapers by Jemma Lewis. Goya's signature printed in gold along the bottom edge of the textblock. 176 pp. 85 etchings reproduced in facsimile throughout, with Goya's own handwritten captions faithfully reproduced, printed using four separate printings to match the tonal range of the originals. Vol. II: commentary by Mark McDonald, bound in black cloth, letterpress title label to upper board, gilt-lettered spine, 23 colour illustrations. Both volumes housed in a black cloth solander case, gilt-titled, blocked in gilt with Goya's signature to the front. Limited facsimile edition. Limited to 980 numbered copies, this being number 94.
This Folio Society edition was published in 2014 to coincide with the major retrospective Goya: Order and Disorder at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, was the first to reproduce the etchings from Goya's own album of proofs rather than from later printed editions, achieving through four separate printing passes a tonal fidelity to the originals that no previous published edition had attempted. The commentary volume by Mark McDonald, curator at the British Museum and a leading authority on Goya's printmaking, introduces the artist and provides detailed commentary on each of the eighty-five plates.
Near fine. A few spots of foxing to main volume edges; otherwise fine inside and out.
Please note: This is a large and heavy two-volume set. Additional postage costs will apply. Please contact us for a shipping quote before purchase.
