I can't recommend Dugongs of the Sky highly enough. It reminded me of reading Deltora Quest, which was always a favourite of mine.
Captain Scree - a name pleasing to say both out loud and in your head - was a complex character, more complicated than you usually see in middle grade fiction, and the issues were close to my heart and compelling. It was warm, heartfelt, and the story was easy to read even though I picked it up during a time when I'm not getting through many books despite being an avid reader. Highly recommend!!!
What a beautiful book! A terrific fantasy story featuring Aussie animals and heaps of twists and turns. As a secondary-school English teacher, I know that middle-school readers, in particular, will love this book, and it has an important theme, about looking after nature and the environment, too.
