Eugene von Guérard's Australian Landscapes (First Limited Edition, Signed)

A pioneering scholarly monograph, by the first woman to be awarded a Doctor of Letters from the University of Melbourne, on the artist now recognised as one of colonial Australia's most significant landscape painters.

Eugène von Guérard (1811–1901) was, by the early 1860s, recognised as the foremost landscape painter in the Australian colonies. His work is celebrated for finely detailed compositions pursuing the sublime and picturesque within the specific and unfamiliar textures of the Australian bush. In 1870 he was appointed the first Master of the School of Painting at the National Gallery of Victoria, a position from which he shaped a generation of Australian artists over the following eleven years. His original 1867 series of twenty-four tinted lithographs, reproduced in full within this volume, remains among his most celebrated achievements in print, and is held today across all of Australia's major public collections.

Marjorie Tipping (1917–2009) was, at the time of this book's publication, already a significant figure in Victorian historical scholarship, having served as the first woman president of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria from 1972 to 1975. She undertook the research for this volume at the direct instigation of Professor Sir Joseph Burke, holder of the Herald Chair of Fine Arts at the University of Melbourne, and the project marked the beginning of her scholarly engagement with colonial Australian art and history.

Oval portrait of the artist mounted to front cover. Numerous illustrations throughout, many in colour, including a facsimile reproduction of von Guérard's important 1867 series of twenty-four tinted lithographs, Eugène von Guérard's Australian Landscapes, originally printed and published by Hamel & Ferguson. Housed in matching slipcase. A bit of end fraying to ribbon marker and some bumping to slipcase corners, else fine.
