The Geelong College's own jubilee history and pupil register, issued for its fiftieth anniversary in 1911 and still one of the two College Histories cited by the school's archive.
The Geelong College was founded on 8 July 1861 by Alexander James Campbell, a Presbyterian minister. For its jubilee year the Old Geelong Collegians resolved to hold celebrations on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 6 to 8 October 1911, as the contemporary press reported. This volume was published for that occasion, and its title names its three parts: a history of the school, a register, and records.
The College's own archive research guide lists it as the "Jubilee History, 1861–1911" and describes it, with the Centenary History of 1961, as one of the College Histories that provide valuable research information. Both contain student registers. The guide directs researchers to the Centenary volume first for pupils and events before 1961, which makes this the earlier of the two, and the one recording the school as it stood at its fiftieth anniversary.
The book was printed by Sands & McDougall, the Melbourne printers and stationers whose name is best known from the Sands and McDougall Melbourne Directory, issued annually from 1862 to 1974.
First edition, published for the Jubilee of 1911. Slim octavo. x, 155pp. Navy blue cloth, gilt to spine, with a vignette of the Geelong College crest to the cover in gilt. Numerous monotone illustrations throughout. Near fine. A touch of wear at spine ends and some sporadic toning to contents. A lovely, crisp copy.
