Himalayan Journals, 2 Volumes (First Edition)

An eminent botanist, explorer, and mountaineer, Joseph Dalton Hooker spent his early career with Ross in the Antarctic. His later career was spent throughout the northern hemisphere. Particularly, he was the first botanist to travel into the Sikkim Himalaya. These volumes cover his travels throughout the Himalayan alps and beyond. A close friend of Charles Darwin, these works contain a dedication to him from Hooker. 

First edition. London: John Murray, 1854. 8vo. Rebound half Morocco and cloth. Pages: vol.1: xxx, 408, 32 pages of advertisements. vol.2: xii, 488. 2 coloured folding maps, 13 coloured plates (incl. 2 frontis, 1 folding), numerous illustrations throughout.

2 volumes. Rebound in fine half blue crushed Morocco and and blue linen cloth. Spine titling in gilt on red Morocco plate. Marbled endpapers. Edges in decorative red patterning. Very good. Wearing to spines, edges and corners of both volumes, more prominent in vol.2. Hinge of vol.2 cracked. Contents in near-fine condition. One folding map has a tear that has been stabilised with archival tape. Preserved excellently, presents beautifully, would make a fine addition to any shelf.
