Limited facsimile set, first edition thus. Numbered 141 of 1450 to rear colophon of each volume. Signed by Dr. Klaus Walter Littger to rear "certificate of conformity" page.

A faithful reproduction of the 1613 original Hortus Eystettensis housed in the Eichstatt University Library, also known as "a magnificent pictorial record of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time, that of Prince Bishop of Eichstatt, Johann Conrad von Gemmingen." The impact this work had on botanical art cannot be overstated. From the art style and production quality to the artistically pleasing layout, this work paved the way forward for how florilegiums were to be undertaken.

Through the three volumes, this work contains 367 full-page colour plates covering over 1,000 plants. The volumes are bound in lavish full white vellum intricately decorated in blind stamping. The spine of each volume contains 10 raised bands, with titling in gilt on two brown morocco panels.

Very good. The set is complete bar the shipping box for the first volume. There is some rubbing to the vellum of each volume due to previous handling, with the strongest rubbing being on the first volume. It is likely volume one was used for display, the vellum bindings have more substantial marking and rubbing than the other two. The contents of all volumes are in fine condition, impeccably preserved. Likewise, the commentary volume is in fine condition and free of markings. A truly incredible set that presents as such.

Note: All internal markings, including ex-libris bookplates and handwriting are scans and are as issued in this set. This is also true for the damage to the titling plates to the volume spines, they are as issued reproductions of the original.

4 volumes, 3 main elephant folio volumes plus large quarto commentary volume. Limited Facsimile Edition (141/1450). Sansepolero: Aboca Museum, 2006. Elephant Folio/Large 4to. Original full vellum. Pages:
