RARE LIMITED EDITION SIGNED BY AUTHOR. NUMBER 59 of 100 PUBLISHED.
Limited and numbered edition, signed by author to title page. London: Paradine, 1977. 8vo. Full purple crushed Morocco hardcover in illustrated slipcase. Pages: vi, 281, genealogical tree fold out.
Near fine. Slip case near fine condition, minor age toning on some surfaces, very small bump to cover. Binding in near fine condition, leather remains supple with colour bright. Gilt tooling bright and bold. Some gentle sunning to spine. Contents fine, fresh and edge gilding bright.
Bound in full purple crushed Morocco with elaborate gilt margins to covers, as well as illustrated gilt vignette and lettering. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt with five raised bands. Protective slipcase decorated in purple to match cover.
A lovely, fine-bound limited edition of one of the cornerstone works in the historical fiction genre. Follows the story of the decline of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, the first imperial family to rule beyond the fall of the Roman Republic. Graves traces the corrupting influence of imperial power alongside the declining support for a united Republic. Written with sophistication, the political narrative surrounding the story is timeless.
