A spectacular volume of photographs taken by Bischof during his time in Japan. Bischof focuses on capturing beauty in both the everyday lives of the people, and in the natural world around them. Also features an essay by Robert Guillain, a warmly written expose into a people and a culture largely misunderstood by the West in the years following WWII. A wonderful work.
First Edition. London: Sylvan Press, (1954). 4to. Original yellow publisher's cloth. Pages: 110.
Overall condition: excellent. Some gentle shelf fading to spine, and some minor scattered markings to cloth. Some foxing and markings to end papers and prelims, otherwise contents in excellent order. Clean, fresh, and bright. An excellent copy of a fantastic work.
Provenance: From the library of Paul & Wendy Reid. Paul Reid is hailed as one of the minds who helped to shape Canberra. As Chief Architect at the NCDC, Paul's most important role was the organisation and construction of the New Parliament House. He also had a sizeable involvement with all of the major works associated with Canberra. His legacy remains celebrated in various forms at multiple universities within Australia.
