The North York Moors, situated on the 'shoulder' of northern England, is the Yorkshire National Park which is often forgotten about. But as Ian Carstairs' camera shows, it can be every bit as spectacular as their better-known neighbours, the Yorkshire Dales, across the Vale of York. Ian Carstairs lives on the edge of the moors and has known them for most of his life. Formerly employed by the North York Moors National Park authority, he later became the deputy chairman of the authority and now works as a countryside consultant where he uses his outstanding photography as a tool to help conserve this timeless landscape. His photographs range from the enigmatic moorland crosses which punctuate the skyline, to life in the villages which cluster at their sides, and the abundant wildlife which makes the moors so special to their thousands of visitors. And he does not ignore the special architecture and industrial past, which so characterises those ancient villages under the moors, nor the spectacular coastline, where the Cleveland Hills meet the North Sea.
