Penelope Hobhouse's Garden Designs

Here, in designs for more than 20 gardens, Penelope Hobhouse seeks to place her professional knowledge as a designer and plantswoman in the hands of all gardeners. Many of the designs are for urban sites or small city gardens, as well as a courtyard garden in Paris and a herb garden in New York City. There are planted cliff terraces in Maine, an outdoor dining room near Venice, a flower-clad pergola and a garden for vegetables in a rural setting. More ambitious schemes include stately double-borders in France, and Penelope's own garden, designed for low maintenance and flourishing on what was once unworkable Dorset clay.
