A rare account of the Hamel tragedy and the first fatality on Mont Blanc, published in New Monthly Magazine in 1820. This article has been extracted from the original magazine and bound in a find calf binding.
First Edition. New Monthly Magazine, 1820. 8vo. Half tan calf and beige cloth hardcover. Pages: frontispiece, title, 311-316 & 333-341.
Bound in half tan calf and beige buckram. Gilt titling to cover on red Morocco panel. Calf borders ruled in blind. Includes postcard with magnificent image of Mont Blanc.
Very good. Binding likely done at some point more recently and is in near fine condition. Leather shows only a hint of wear at extremities. Binding tight and square. Contents in excellent condition for their age and for the quality of paper stock they were printed on. Some toning and foxing present, but paper remains flexible and in good order. Contents clear and legible. A beautifully bound copy of an extremely rare account of a very early mountaineering disaster.
Provenance: From the library of Warwick H. Williams. W. Williams blind stamp to title.
