Harry Hartog's review
Confession time! I've never read a spy novel before... I loved this book. I think my perception of spy novels had been tarnished by Bond films. I was ready for bravado, sexism and fast cars, but this book was brilliant. Yes it had an 'alternate world' setting, but it had its soul based in facts. the protagonist has aged well & the sexism was minimal if non-existent. There were twists, turns, murder, double agents, secrets & deceptions. Deighton is a master of his craft & I consider myself blessed that this was my first foray into the genre.
Description
A chilling alternative history in which the Nazis have conquered Britain, now in the iconic Penguin Crime series
It is 1941 and Germany has won the war. Britain is occupied, Churchill executed and the King imprisoned in the Tower of London. At Scotland Yard, Detective Inspector Archer tries to do his job and keep his head down. But when a body is found in a Mayfair flat, what at first appears to be a routine murder investigation sends him into a world of espionage, deceit and betrayal.
