This journal documents Merton's final journey in 1968, just months before his death in Bangkok. The journal captures Merton's travels through Alaska, where he sought solitude in the wilderness and explored the possibility of establishing a hermitage there.

During this trip, Merton visited various monasteries and spent time in remote locations, including the area around Eagle River and encounters with both religious communities and the stark Alaskan landscape. The journal reveals his deep appreciation for the natural world and his ongoing spiritual quest for greater solitude and contemplation away from his established life at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky.
