The standard modern history of Anglo-Saxon England in the Folio Society’s two-volume edition, with a companion volume of 136 colour photographs of artefacts and a new introduction by Gareth Williams of the British Museum.
The Anglo-Saxons first appeared from Phaidon in 1982, a lavishly illustrated narrative of the six centuries between the Roman withdrawal and the Norman Conquest by James Campbell, Eric John and Patrick Wormald, three of the leading historians of the period. It remains a landmark in the field: a history that sets the political and institutional record beside the evidence of archaeology, art and manuscripts. The Folio Society’s edition follows the revised text of 1991, with minor emendations, and adds a new introduction by Gareth Williams, Curator of Early Medieval Coins and Viking Collections at the British Museum, bringing the archaeological discoveries since the text was last revised. The photographic volume gives the artefacts a book of their own, with the Sutton Hoo treasures, pages of the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Alfred Jewel among its subjects, and the bindings draw on the Sutton Hoo helmet and the Great Gold Buckle.
Folio Society Heirloom Edition. First published by Phaidon, 1982. Based on the revised edition of 1991, with minor emendations. Two volumes with slipcase, large octavo. Vol. I: Text, xv, 410pp., with black-and-white photographs and maps. Vol. II: Commentary, 104pp., colour photographs. Both volumes bound in green cloth blocked in gold, with designs by Yann Legendre and gilded top edges, in the publisher’s matching blocked red cloth slipcase. Fine throughout, a pristine set.
