First edition of White's third novel. Features art by Roy de Maistre on dust jacket, the first of White's books to do so. White's first novel Happy Valley had been dedicated to de Maistre. However, this book marked the first in their multiple collaborations together.

The novel saw a largely unsuccessful launch, being shunned by audiences. Despite this, many critics still consider this to be White's best novel due to its poetic language and the dense complexity of its style. It demonstrates an ambitious and innovative use of imagery and modernist techniques. This is also considered to be one of the novels that pushed Australian literature towards international fame in the 20th century and was crucial in allowing the publication of other novels with a stronger Australian identity.

Very good. Dust jacket price-clipped, in somewhat damaged condition. Chipping and loss to creases with numerous tape repairs made previously. Binding sturdy and tight, but some markings and delamination present on front board. End papers foxed. Otherwise, contents in very good condition, largely clear of markings. Booksellers stamps for Grahame Book Company on FBEP.

First edition. London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, (1948). 8vo. Original black hardcover in original price-clipped dust jacket. Pages: [vi], 349.
