SWANSON, Vern G. The Biography and Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. London: Garton & Co. in association with Scolar Press, 1990.

Folio (35 x 24 cm). Original burgundy publisher's cloth, top edge gilt. Pictorial slipcase. 512 pp. plus loosely inserted erratum leaf. Illustrated with approximately 385 reproductions, more than 100 full-page, 50 in colour, together with 48 photographs in the biographical section. Limited edition of 750 unnumbered copies. First and only edition.

Lawrence Alma-Tadema was one of the most celebrated painters of the Victorian age and one of the most thoroughly forgotten of the twentieth century. His meticulous evocations of ancient Greece and Rome, once commanded the highest prices on the London market.

Compiled here by Swanson is the definitive catalogue raisonné: a full biography, a complete survey of the paintings with provenance, exhibition history, and bibliography, and a visual record of an oeuvre that ranges from intimate domestic studies to the grandest theatrical spectacles of the Victorian imagination. Limited to 750 copies, it has been scarce on the market for many years.

Warmly inscribed by the author in ink to the half-title: "For our dearest friends from AUSTRALIA. With the fond hope that you'll never recover from TADMANIA! Vern G. Swanson."

A near fine copy in like slipcase showing normal shelf wear and a single faint mark to the cloth cover.
