First Folio Society printing of this translation and illustration programme. Now out of print. Previously published by the Folio Society with illustrations by Nigel Lambourne in 1964.

Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821–1881) wrote The Brothers Karamazov between 1878 and 1880, publishing it in serial form in The Russian Messenger before his death in January 1881. It stands as his final and, by wide critical consensus, greatest achievement: a novel of such scope and philosophical seriousness that it has been claimed as essential reading by thinkers as varied as Freud, Einstein, Wittgenstein, and Heidegger, and as a formative influence by novelists from Kafka to Cormac McCarthy.

This edition is translated by David Magarshack (1899–1977) and features wood engravings by Harry Brockway, a member of the Society of Wood Engravers since 1984 and one of the Folio Society's most distinguished contemporary illustrators.

Near fine. Some very mild foxing to fore-edge and preliminary leaves; otherwise clean and bright throughout. Slipcase shows very mild shelf wear.
