Folio Society limited facsimile edition. First edition thus. Numbered on limitation page, 50 of 1000.

The original Herefordshire Pomona was a painstaking cataloguing of the apples and pears grown in Herefordshire, England. Created in the late 19th century, it was an early attempt to systematically record the varieties among English fruit and is considered a key work in late-Victorian natural history. Alongside this, the illustrations were produced over a period of eight years and their production into the work shows a beautiful early example of fine chromolithography. Only 600 copies of the original were published and are incredibly scarce nowadays.

This edition, a facsimile reproduction by The Folio Society, was limited to only 1000 copies, of which only 980 were for sale. The original Herefordshire Pomona contained the illustrated plates and text within the same volume. The Folio Society chose to separate them into two separate volumes. This "enables the text and plates to be viewed side-by-side" (introductory brochure). Alongside this, 4 plates have been duplicated and included loose within a separate protective sleeve. Together, this is a marvellous set, beautifully bound, and presents in breath-taking manner alongside its full suite of gorgeous plates.

Housed in green buckram-wrapped solander protective box lettered and decorated in gilt. Plate volume bound in quarter green goatskin and gilt-illustrated green cloth. Text volume bound in full gilt-illustrated green cloth. 4 loose coloured plates in protective slip.

Main volumes bound in quarter green goatskin and gilt stamped green cloth. Titling to spines in gilt.

Overall condition: Fine. Impeccably preserved. All volumes and contents fine in like solander case. A spectacular copy.
