Compiled by order of the Malvern Council, John Butler Cooper's history of Malvern completes what stands, alongside his companion volumes on St Kilda and Prahran, as a genuinely significant trilogy of official Melbourne suburban civic histories. The Malvern Historical Society's own published bibliography of the suburb's history describes Cooper's 1935 volume as its "pioneering history," a status it has retained despite the later publication of Lynne Strahan's 1989 supplementary history and subsequent local scholarship.

This volume remains a foundational resource for researchers of the area's development, architecture, and civic life.
