Folio Society limited facsimile edition. First edition thus. Numbered on colophon, 1648 of 1750.
A facsimile edition of the original illustrated collection of bible stories produced in England circa 1350. Profusely illustrated throughout, the publication was intended for those who were unable to read text bibles, being the majority of the population at the time. Interestingly, the text was originally written in Norman French by an unknown source who also used contemporary English dress in the illustrations. The work takes its name from Holkham Hall, Norfolk, where the book long resided, before being transferred to the British Library.
The original work was printed on vellum, where this facsimile has been printed on heavy Furioso paper, specifically designed to replicate the look and feel of vellum. Also features an accompanying volume with commentary by Michelle P. Brown explaining the history of the work.
Both volumes housed in patterned blue buckram solander case. Main volume bound in half dark-blue goatskin leather and blue patterned buckram. Leather margined in patterned gilt. Cover titling on dark-blue goatskin panel, titled in gilt and red with gilt- and-colour illustrations by David Eccles. All edges gilt. Contents printed on Furioso paper. Profusely illustrated throughout in colour on every page. Commentary volume bound in quarter blue buckram and darker blue boards. Cloth margins and spine titling in gilt. Cover titling on white panel. Retains original protective board separating volumes.
Overall condition: Fine. Impeccably preserved. All volumes and contents fine in like solander case. A spectacular copy.
