RARE FIRST EDITION BOUND BY FINE BINDER BAYNTUN-RIVIERE

First edition. London: Chapman and Hall. 1839. 8vo. Hardcover bound in full Morocco with gilt tooling. Pages: [xvi], 624, frontispiece, 39 illustrated plates.

Near fine. Leather remains supple and strong, mild sunning to spine. Gilt tooling very well preserved, remains bright. Dentelles and endpapers remarkably well preserved and in fine condition. Previous owner dedication on inner of front free end paper. Contents near fine, minor age markings throughout text block, more prevalent on illustration plates due to paper used.

Bound in full red crushed Morocco by fine binder Bayntun-Riviere. Gilt stamped illustrated vignette of Dickens to front panel. Author signature in gilt to rear panel. Spine lettered in gilt. 5 raised bands with gilt decorated compartments. Elaborate gilt tooled dentelles. "Bantun-Riviere" stamped in gilt on lower front dentelle. All edges gilt. Marbled end papers. Portrait of dickens as well as 39 illustrated engravings by Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz). This copy contains all points of error consistent with being a first state printing, as well as the original half title. It also does not feature the holes that would mark it as a mixed binding of monthly parts.

This edition contains several points consistent with being an early first printing:

  • Frontispiece and all 39 engravings have publisher listed at bottom of plate

  • “latter” instead of “letter” on p.160 line 43

  • flys” instead of “flies” on p.245 line 10

  • visiters” instead of “visitors” on p.272 line 2

  • incontestible” instead of “incontestable” on p.297 line 22

  • suprise” instead of “surprise” on p.586 line 24

  • “visitor” has been replaced with “sister” on p.123 line 17

Overall, this copy presents remarkably. It contains almost all of the points associated with an early first printing. The Morocco binding by Bayntun-Riviere is stunning, with only slight fading to the colours on the spine. This would make an excellent addition to any book collection or as a present to a collector or keen reader.
