The scarce first edition of a landmark Australian photobook, signed by both photographers.
The Seventh Wave grew from a project that Trent Parke and Narelle Autio began in 1999 and pursued for about two years, photographing swimmers in the water at Sydney beaches such as Bondi, Freshwater and Manly and at sites farther north, including Newcastle, Port Macquarie and Byron Bay. Many of the black-and-white images were made beneath the surface, in a summer marked by drownings, and Autio has described the ocean as a force that both gives and takes life. Robert Drewe contributes an essay on the beach in Australian culture. Parke, later the first Australian invited to join Magnum Photos, is credited with a second-prize World Press Photo award for the series, and the book has become one of the most sought-after Australian photobooks of its decade.
First edition. Signed by both Parke and Autio to the title. With an essay by Robert Drewe. Oblong quarto. Unpaginated [128pp]. Black cloth boards in the original pictorial dust jacket. Fine in a like dust jacket, near-pristine with only a hint of wear at the upper front turn-in. The binding is sound and the cover boards are fine, with some scattered, faint foxing along the upper edge and to the preliminaries. A near fine copy, beautifully preserved.
