Published to coincide with the "Van Gogh at Work" exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, marking the 160th anniversary of the artist's birth. Quarto. Mid-brown cloth solander box with paper cover, letterpress-printed title label and gilt spine titling, lined with hand-marbled paper by Jemma Lewis. The solander case itself is a facsimile of the actual display box used by Van Gogh Museum curators in 1970. Contents: Sketchbook One, bound in light brown vegetable parchment with ink-splattered page edges, 96 pp; Sketchbook Two, quarter-bound in black cloth with raised corners and black paper covers, 42 pp; Sketchbook Three; Sketchbook Four (largest, approximately half unused, with blank and torn pages faithfully reproduced); a full commentary volume cataloguing and explaining the sketches; a companion booklet, "Looking Over the Artist's Shoulder"; a folder containing facsimiles of loose leaves from the collection; loose-leaf colophon. Some very minor markings here and there; otherwise fine throughout. Presents wonderfully.
