First US edition (published in the same year as the UK First) of Smith's account of his ascent of Mont Blanc, set in the context of the history of attempts to ascent the mountain. The book went through several reprintings by the latter 19th century, and the first edition has become scarce. Smith turned his story into a play that found extreme success through the 1850s.

Bound in original embossed blue-green publisher's cloth. Gilt titling to spine. Cover illustration blocked in gilt with decorative patterning in blind to both covers. Good. Binding sturdy. Wear and chipping to spine edges. Preliminaries foxed. Rubbing at corners. pp.51 has been folded at top corner, leave a crease and some markings on the adjoining pages. Otherwise, contents clean and bright.
