Folio Society limited facsimile edition. First edition thus. Numbered on rear limitation page, 427 of 1000.

A huge, magnificent volume. Maria Sibylla Merian was a German illustrator who, through her particular interest in insects, turned to become a naturalist. She was the first person to determine the life cycle and metamorphosis of many species. In 1699 travelled to the then Dutch colony of Surinam in northeast South America to study and draw tropical insects. One of the results of her work were the 91 plates presented in this facsimile reproduction, the first accurate recording of many insects and plants from the region.

Housed in green canvas cloth solander case. Bound in quarter green goatskin and brown canvas cloth. Spine titling in gilt on black leather panel. Cover illustration in gilt, silver, and black reproduced from plate 43 by David Eccles. Commentary volume by Julie Harvey, bound in green canvas cloth with gilt spine titling and cover titling on tan panel.

Overall condition: Excellent. Some minor markings and bumping to case and cover bindings. Contents fine, in like-new condition. Commntary volume near-fine, a few spots to foredge. Sleeve holding loose prints somewhat foxed, but prints themselves fine and without markings.
