Two volumes bound in contemporary half tan calf and marbled boards. Edges marbled. Near Fine. Leather smooth, supple, and well preserved. Binding tight with only very mild cocking in volume 2. Contents near fine, only mild age toning towards edges. Included engravings, maps, and illustrations clear and well preserved. Colours bright. A fine-bound copy of an integral work of the voyages of an important figure in Australian history.
Detailed accounting of Cook's three voyages around the world. Features numerous steel engravings based on illustrations from the Cook journals and other artists of note. Portraits of Cook and Joseph Banks and a compliment of maps by John Tallis. Many of these maps now bear the London Printing and Publishing Company imprint.
Also included is an apparently unrecorded map of Australia by W. Hughes dated 1842. The States shown are Western Australia, South Australia, Australian Felix, Van Diemen's Land, and New South Wales.
