CARTER, Howard (intro. David P. Silverman; illus. Harry Burton; photographs Sandro Vannini; slipcase design Peter Suart). The Tomb of Tutankhamun. London: The Folio Society, 2013. 2 vols.
Large Octavo. Both volumes bound in full black cloth, illustrated and gilt-blocked to covers and spines. Main volume cover blocked in gilt, blue, and orange. Top edges gilt. Printed photographic endpapers. Pictorial cloth slipcase with winged goddess motifs designed by Peter Suart, blocked in gold. Main volume: xix, 427 pp., with frontispiece and 32 pages of black and white photographic plates by Harry Burton. Companion volume (The Treasures): 121 pp., with 140 full-colour photographs by Sandro Vannini. First Folio Society edition.
Howard Carter's discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings on 4 November 1922 was among the most consequential archaeological events of the twentieth century, and his account of it — published in three volumes between 1923 and 1933 — is among the finest first-person records of archaeological work ever written. The Folio Society edition of 2013 presents Carter's complete text with a new introduction by Professor David P. Silverman, one of the foremost authorities on ancient Egypt, alongside the original black and white photographs taken by Harry Burton of the Metropolitan Museum of Art — the images that created a worldwide sensation when first published and that remain the primary visual record of the tomb as it was found.
The companion volume presents 140 magnificent colour photographs by Sandro Vannini, allowing the artefacts — among them statues, jewellery, the details of the shrines, the sarcophagus, and the funeral mask — to be seen in extraordinary detail that was simply unavailable to readers of the original three-volume publication. Vannini's images, made with modern photographic technology from the objects now held in Cairo's Egyptian Museum, constitute a visual companion to Carter's text of genuine scholarly and aesthetic value.
The slipcase, designed by Peter Suart — a long-time Folio Society collaborator — carries a winged goddess motif derived from the art of the tomb itself, blocked in gold. The production throughout reflects Folio Society design at its most considered.
Fine. Both volumes and slipcase present as new throughout.
