First edition. London: Hurst & Blackett, Limited, 1901. 8vo. Original blue-green publisher's cloth. xvi, 348pp. 6 pages of advertisements at rear. Numerous illustrations & 2 fold-out maps.

Louis Bernacchi was an Australian physicist and chief scientist on the Southern Cross expedition. Under the leadership of Carsten Borchgrevink, this expedition achieved what many thought impossible: successfully overwintering on the Antarctic mainland at Cape Adare.

Published in 1901, To the South Polar Regions provides detailed observations of Antarctic conditions, scientific measurements, and the challenges faced during the expedition. Bernacchi's scientific background allowed him to contribute valuable meteorological and magnetic observations that were crucial for understanding Antarctic weather patterns and conditions.

The book is not an account of dry scientific reporting. Bernacchi's writing style weaves together rigorous scientific observations with gripping accounts of daily survival in Earth's most hostile environment.

Bound in vertically-grained blue-green publisher's cloth. Lettering and ruling on covers and spine in gilt and blind. Includes brochure for facsimile edition and clipping of advertisement for another copy of book. Very good. Binding tight and square, though spine strip very slightly loosened and some minor cracking at gutter of endpapers. Mild rubbing and markings on cover bindings. Very slight wearing at corners. Ex-Libris plate of Edvardi Festi Kelly on FBEP. W. Williams sticker on FFEP.  Toning to end papers. Minor foxing and toning here and there throughout contents. Small tear to first fold-out map, stabilised with archival repair tape.
