First edition, first issue without the inserted leaves containing the author's preface at pp. iv-v, which was accidentally omitted from the first few printed copies.

Taylor first experienced the Antarctic as a member of Shackleton's "Nimrod" expedition (1907-9), and returned in 1910 as geologist on Robert Scott's "Terra Nova" expedition. His passion for geology is evident in the pages of the present book, which offers his account of Scott's last expedition. For this reason, it was perhaps harder to read than other books about the expedition, and Taylor's work is the scarcest of the first-hand narratives from the expedition.

Very good. Rebound in attractive later green cloth. Titling on spine in stamped gilt. Binding tight and square. Original text block in very good condition. Some age toning and foxing throughout. Frontispiece has some wearing and minor tears to edges. Fold-out map has tear of about 10cm at gutter joint, stabilised with archival tape. Photographic plates and illustrations in excellent condition, contents bright and clear.
