The Folio Society’s first illustrated edition of Studs Terkel’s landmark oral history of American working life, with a new introduction by Scott Simon.

Studs Terkel’s Working was first published by Pantheon in 1974 and was a bestseller on release. The book collects the voices of people from many occupations, among them farm labourers, miners, executives, athletes and gravediggers, set out in nine thematic sections. It asks what work means to the people who do it and how they feel about it, and it has since been adapted as a Broadway musical, a graphic novel adaptation by Harvey Pekar in 2009, and a Netflix series in 2023.

First Folio Society Edition. First published in the US by Pantheon Books, 1974. The text follows the New Press edition of 2004, with minor emendations. Large, square octavo. lxiii, 679pp. Illustrated with colour photographs from the Documerica project. Pictorial cloth hardcover, printed and spot-varnished, in the publisher’s slipcase. Fine volume. The slipcase is a little shelf worn, with a bump to the lower rear corner and small tear to upper corner.
